    :  Here we have a
    RARE 1800's, C. BAKER LONDON Bone Folding Parallel Drafting Navigational Rule, 6 in.
    Charles Baker was an optical and scientific instrument maker in London, England.  He established his firm at 244 High Holborn, London England in 1851. He sold the usual range of mathematical instruments (rules, etc.), surgical instruments, as well as microscopes.  His firm operated until approx. 1893 when it was purchased by another firm.  This parallel rule example is marked by the maker and includes his address.
    These early Bone rules were used extensively in the charting or course plotting on paper maps by ship's navigators in the1700-1800's.  They were also used by Draftsmen and Architects of the day. This rule was designed to allow the user to transfer a parallel line to another place on the diagram or map. This is identified as an early instrument by the ornate Georgian concentric circle decorations on the GERMAN SILVER folding hinges.  The bone material is in very, very good condition with an undisturbed aged patina.  There are no stains, chips or cracks.  Only a few scratches (see pics).  Legs line up as they should.  There are no owner marks.
    These 'maker marked' rules are very hard to find !!
